Humble Hillel and the Essence of the Torah
Description:
An in-depth exploration of the Talmud’s account of Hillel and the three converts (Shabbat 31a).
While many are familiar with Hillel’s famous teaching in that story (“What you despise, don’t do to another; this is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary, go and study”), this account has so much more.
We will explore the three levels in the story. The most explicit level, which is about character; the more subtle level, which is about conversion; and the most subtle level, which is about the essence of the Torah.
There will plenty of time for discussion.
